Single-use plastic banned in the EU by 2021
Plastics make up 80-85 % of marine litter, which is considered a major threat to marine and coastal biodiversity. Plastic residue is found in marine species – such as sea turtles, seals, whales and birds, but also in fish and shellfish, and therefore in the human food chain. Marine litter also costs the European Union economy an estimated €259 million to €695 million per year.
The European Commission carried out a public consultation between December 2017 and February 2018, which received over 1.800 contributions. An overwhelming majority of respondents considered that action to tackle marine litter from single-use plastics was ‘necessary and urgent’. In March 2019, European Parliament approved a new law introducing a series of measures regarding the top 10 single-use plastics. These series of measures include: market restriction, consumption reduction, separate collection, product design, producer responsibility, awareness raising and product ban.
